MCAFEE, SANDERS AND SMITH LEAD INVADERS
AT INAUGURAL MIDWEST CHALLENGE MEET

(INDIANAPOLIS)-- John McAfee, Hope Sanders and Le'gretta Smith turned in personal best performances among 110 total athletes at the inaugural Midwest Chllenge track and field meet held June 24 at the I.U. Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus.

The meet was held one week prior to the Fifth Third Bank Clash For Cash to take place Saturday, July 1 with more than $10,000 in prize money. The Clash For Cash is one of the final meets prior to the U.S. Olympic Trials to take place July 14-23 in Sacramento, Calif.

McAfee, Sanders and Smith, are among the 12 Indiana Invaders that have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

McAfee came from third to first over the final two hurdles in the 400 hurdles and won in a time of 49.97. Sanders was runner-up to Ashley Wysong in the 800 meters in 2:04.32 and Smith was second to Karlene Haughton (Canada) in the womens 400 meters in 57.32.

Other highlight performances were provided by Lamark Carter (Nike) in the triple jump (16.81 meters) and Calvin Bostic (USAF), and Sherman Armstrong (Un. Illinois) with Olympic qualifying marks of 49.99 and 50.00 very closely behind McAfee in the 400 hurdles.

Kirt Thompson (Indiana Invaders), who returned from his native Trinidad after winning his national championship, won the javelin (76.20). Aubrey Herring (Indiana State Un.) won the 100 hurdles (13.70).
