INVADERS HEADED TO ATLANTA

February 3, 2001

(SOUTH BEND, IND.)-The Indiana Invaders qualified three athletes for U.S. Indoor Nationals at the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame.

Invaders' Hope Sanders, an Indianapolis native and a Warren Central H.S. graduate won the 800 with a indoor PR of 2:06.73 which easily surpassed the national qualifying mark. Teammate Le'gretta Smith qualified with a win in the 60-meter hurdles posting two life-time bests, 8.27 seconds in the qualifying round and 8.26 seconds in the finals. Smith also posted a very solid open 400 time in finishing 3rd with a 54.88 second effort. Kyle Baker, an Anderson Indiana native and graduate of Michigan State, turned in a qualifying time of 13:51.62 with a narrow win in the 5000 over a solid field where 5 men broke 13:56.

A strong performance was also turned in by the Invaders' Gareth Wilford. Wilford's second place 8:06.40 in the 3000 meters lowered his PR by nearly 10 seconds.

"After a slow start to our indoor season we appear to be headed toward a solid showing in Atlanta at our indoor national championships", said Invaders' Head Coach Chris Buhler. Added Buhler, " Baker has put himself in a position to challenge for a spot on the US World CC Team in two weeks and in Le'gretta we are seeing a 400 meter hurdler who is doing the little things that will take her to the next level by late June when we have our outdoor championships".

Finally, the makings of a respectable 1600m relay team might be in the works as 4 Invaders have begun the early season with sub 50 sec. 400's. "There is a lot of work to be done when the "old man" and coach has the fastest time but I have confidence that these young men will be a respectable relay team by the time we arrive at our national club championships in July, it is very early and we are in no hurry at this time", said Invaders' Sprint Coach Robert Thomas. Thomas added, " We might see a qualifying time for US Indoor but most important is getting this group on a solid foundation for the outdoor season".
