CARRI LONG LEADS INVADERS WITH NATIONAL QUALIFIER
May 13, 2001
(INDIANAPOLIS) Invaders' Carri Long (Brazil, Ind.) gave a
preview of what to expect from the Invaders at the Billy
Hayes Invitational on Saturday with a Friday evening
qualifier (1.84) in Illinois. Long qualified for her second
USATF National Outdoor Championship. Long is the 14th
member of the Invaders to qualify for Outdoor Nationals.
The Invaders finished with 6 event wins with Long in her
second competition of the weekend joining teammates Tara
Loper, Kirt Thompson, Hope Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind.),
Kelly French, and Judy Porter with wins in their respective
events: Hammer Throw, Javelin Throw, 800, 1500, and
3,000. French's mark (4:22.94) in dueling with 1500
runner-up and teammate Priscilla Hein (4:25.39) was a
personal best performance.
"Thompson's dominating
performance was quite remarkable given his back
spasms that just a few days ago had him nearly 100%
immobilized," said Invaders Throws Coach Matt Gaston.
Added Gaston, "Our St. Vincent Sports Medicine Team and
athletic trainer Jon Grant really deserve an assist on
Thompson's performance today."
Invaders' multi-event specialist, decathlete Phil McMullen,
tied his career best in the pole vault (5.08) and took 2nd in
the event.
The Invaders are focused on peaking for the USATF National
Championships in Eugene, Oregon (June 21-24) and at the first
annual USA National Club Track & Field Championships in
Indianapolis, Indiana (July 19-21). With the first USA National
Club Championship to be held in Indianapolis, the Invaders' look
forward to a strong showing on their home turf.
