INVADERS' DEDEE NATHAN COMPETES TODAY AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
August 4, 2001
(INDIANAPOLIS) The Indiana Invaders' Olympic Heptathlete, DeDee
Nathan competes today at the World Championships in Edmonton,
Canada. Today Nathan will compete in the Heptathlon's first four
events: 100H, High Jump, Shot Put, and 200. Nathan seeks a "Top
5" finish and an improvement over her best previous outdoor World
Championship finish (7th in '97) in the Heptathlon.
Nathan won the USA National Outdoor Championships in
June with 6174 points and holds the American Record of 4753
points in the Pentathlon that she established while winning the
1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
"I don't worry about specific competitors going into a contest,
as I need to stay focused on the things I can control" said Nathan.
Added Nathan, "Given my unusual circumstances in Eugene
for this year's nationals I felt that my performance verified my
fitness as being at a level where a top performance is not just
reasonable but expected and I look forward to that challenge in
Edmonton".
