HEIN VICTORY LEADS INVADERS TO BOSTON MAYOR'S CUP TITLE

October 28, 2001
(INDIANAPOLIS) Priscilla Hein led the Indiana Invaders women's team to a narrow win against defending national cross country champions, B.A.A. Running Club, by 3 points (63 to 66) in the closely contested 12th edition of the Boston Mayor's Cup on October 28th. Hein's impressive winning performance of 16:30 on the 5K course was eight seconds off the well established course record of 16:22 set by Kathy Franey, of NIKE International, in 1997.

Hein's individual win was followed by teammates Kelly French in 5th, Keisha Banks in 11th, Susie Motl in 21st, and Kathy Kadziolka in 27th. Collette Liss completed the race, but did not score due to severe intestinal problems.

"From a women's standpoint we put 5 in the top 30 without Liss. Hein did a hell of a job from start to finish. I'm very happy with where she is at in her training. Banks finished very well for being 11th in a field of 146 runners. Susie ran really well. Kathy competed in her first cross country situation for us and I'm happy with her performance. Overall I'm really pleased with the performance of our women today,' said coach Chris Buhler.

On the men's side, the Invaders faced a very strong field with 19 teams competing. Rick Sluder in 8th led the men to a 5th place team finish (200 points). Todd Moroney placed 31st, Gareth Wilford in 54th, Phil Hudnall in 71st, and Eddie Nehus took 90th. The Invaders men's team, while off to a slower start than the formidable women's squad, expects to have an improved team performance in Mobile, Alabama on December 1st for the USATF Club National Cross Country Championships. The men's team competition was won by the host team B.A.A. with a score of 92 points.

Buhler added, "Rick was our front runner and did a fantastic job with staying in the hunt with the lead pack. I'm really pleased with the job he did. Gareth's performance is his first competition after coming off a hamstring injury. Eddie PR'ed by 25 seconds and for a 800m kid I'm really pleased with what he did. Our focus is and has always been set on club nationals. When we hit our taper in two weeks, we'll be a lot more competitive than today. They'll be able to do the job that I want them to do."
