INVADERS' JADA PHELPS JUMPS TO FOURTH AT USA INDOOR NATIONALS

March 2, 2002
(INDIANAPOLIS) Invaders' Jada Phelps, a 2001 graduate of Ball State University, finished fourth in the long jump (5.98) at the USA National Indoor Championships in NYC, New York on March 2. Teammate Le'gretta Smith finished 7th in the 60H (8.36) improving upon her 2001 performance of 8th place.

Phelps jumped a season best in her first indoor national championship and improved upon her eighth place finish at the outdoor national championships in 2001. Smith ranked ninth of entries going into the championship is the only 400 meter hurdler in the event. Smith was seventh going into the finals after running in the prelims with a time of 8.32. This is Smith's second consecutive year as the only 400 meter hurdler in the 60H finals.

Team Director Greg Harger said, "As a team we brought four athletes ranked in the top 10 and two ranked in the top 5 and came out of the meet with four top 10 finishes and two in the top five. We had a great competitive effort out of Wilson. Now we'll take a brief break and hopefully have the best outdoor season we've ever had."

Overall the Invaders placed well in New York with Toyinda Wilson taking third in the weight throw, Phelps placing fourth in the long jump, Carri Long took sixth in the high jump, and Smith finished seventh in the 60H.
