INVADERS' NATHAN SECOND ON DAY ONE
June 20, 2002
(INDIANAPOLIS) Invaders' Olympian DeDee Nathan finished day one
in second place in the heptathlon at the Outdoor National Track
& Field Championships with 3617 points, 11 points behind leader
Shelia Burrell. The multi-event championship is in Edwards Stadium
on the campus of the University of California - Berkely.
Nathan opened the competition in fourth place with a time of 13.73 seconds
in the 100 hurdles. Nathan jumped into second place with a mark
of 1.73 meters in the high jump. After the third event, Nathan took the
lead, with her winning throw of 14.81 in the shot put.
In the final event of day one, Nathan's effort to maintain her top spot,
a 25.28 second performance in the 200, was undone by Burell's 24.12 second
run. Nathan, with three events remaining in the heptathlon competition,
will start day two a mere 11 points behind Burrel.
Team Director Greg Harger said, "Nathan was a little short of her
expectations in the 100 hurdles and 200, but met her expectations
in the high jump and shot put. It all averaged out after day one."
Harger added, "Tomorrow's winner will likely be the one with the
most consistancy over the three events remaining. Burrell and Nathan's final
day of competition has the makings of a very close finish which should
make this an exciting competition on the final day."
