INVADERS' DEDEE NATHAN TAKES SECOND AT OUTDOOR NATIONALS
June 21, 2002
(INDIANAPOLIS) Indiana Invaders' Olympian DeDee Nathan finished the
second day of competition at the USA National Championships as the
national runner-up in the heptathlon. Shelia Burrell was the day's
victor with a score of 6299 points to Nathan's 5995 points.
Nathan entered day two in second place, just 11 points behind Burrell.
Nathan tied for second in the long jump with a mark of 6.08, finished
fourth in the javelin throw (40.91), and sixth in the 800 (2:20.33).
Nathan said, "After a long year it was a moderate performance. In
general I was pleased with my placing. I look forward to taking a
rest and then going forward next season."
Team Director Greg Harger said, "Nathan's performance wasn't a suprise
or a disappointment what with her involvement in collegiate coaching,
this past year. Coaching was a very valuable experience for her and it
answered some important questions regarding her future career options.
It wasn't an ideal environment to train but it did keep her very busy
through a year that can be difficult for a veteran to stay focused as
her event doesn't offer much in the way of major international
championships.
