AMERICAN MILERS CLUB: 2008 HIGH PERFORMANCE SERIES
May 31, 2008
(INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana) The American Milers Club High Performance Series, in its four-day format focused on Olympic Trials qualifying opportunities for middle distance races, has kicked off its fifth year of high performance competition in 2008. The series' final three competitions are set for early June on the famed IU Michael A. Carroll Stadium's track in downtown Indianapolis on the IUPUI campus.
Based on the series' historical precedent, the American Milers Club HP Series will likely serve as one of the most prolific opportunities for elite US athletes to post qualifying marks for the 2008 US Olympic Trials in the final days of qualification.
The 2008 series will build on the momentum of the four year history of the series where athletes have generated* 25 SUB-4 Minute Milers (1500 meter equivalent) for men.
* 14 SUB-4:45 Milers (1500 meter equivalent) for women.
* 19 SUB-1:48 800 meter men.
* 22 SUB-2:07 800 meter women.
* 17 Olympic Trials Qualifying marks in 2004.
The kick off event Saturday evening, May 31st was a rousing kick off day to the series as one national record (GBR), 22 Olympic Trials qualifying marks, 51 out of 78 athletes posting season's best marks which included 17 marks that were lifetime bests.
The final three days of 2008 series will held in the final week of qualifications for this year's Olympic Trials set for Eugene, Oregon in late June and early July.
With the daily posting in the series of 2008 US Olympic Trials qualifying marks, great competition is expected in every contest as these races are the equivalent of the INDY 500's exciting final bump day. The Olympic Trials have fixed field sizes and as runners post faster times other Trials qualified athletes are bumped from the Olympic Trials fields. Bumped athletes can, and many will, race again here in Indianapolis on June 9, 11, 14 to attempt to secure their tickets to the US Olympic Trials.
